#art/#history - #noirvember: as i was saying, you may be rolling round the name 'jacques tourneur' in your hat & thinking it sounds familiar. 'cat people'? 'i walked with a zombie'? yeah, see? you know this french film director. i'm celebrating the 114th anniversary of his birth. pictured here is french actress, simone simon, whose character in 'cat people' is meant to be serbian-born fashion designer who may or may not be a murderous panther in human form. it's a striking & innovative film - from 1942! - that introduced the 'lewton bus' horror standby that we all know & love: that bit when your guts are pulled up in anticipation of a phenomenal scare, but the tension is broken by a commonplace occurence (the hissing of a kettle or a passing car). both of the films i mentioned above are available on BBC iplayer right now, by the way.
