sillitoe's rogue muse

art/#istory: long before the smiths, albert finney was poster boy, rogue muse & inspiration for many an early 60s british new wave/kitchen sink drama. in the film adaptation of sillitoe's novel, 'saturday night & sunday morning', finney's arthur seaton was someone you wanted to slap in exasperation. just how many times would his struggle for freedom fuck up others' lives? &, yet, it was impossible to hate him. sillitoe, who died #otd in 2010, was too clever for that. he knew how to write complex characters, you see.
