missing hughes

art/history: he had the soul of a poet & the brain of a surrealist. that this gentle, funny soul is no longer trapped in earthly clay may be sweet relief for sean hughes, who died today. a bright star, the youthful enthusiasm that infused his influential 'sean's show' morphed into a more curmudgeonly persona as he grew older - & i liked them both. it took a period of heavy adjustment when he left 'never mind the buzzcocks', but he actively avoided complacency. he was happy in his own company. well, he would be: he had impeccable taste, from samuel beckett to the smiths. a stalwart vegetarian, i once saw him milling about - way lowkey - at a vegan festival in london & i couldn't bear to break his cover. i thought he'd appreciate being left alone.
