art/#history: listen up, binlids. you need to heed this lesson. learn to resist in small ways. fascists aren't keen on drawing outside the lines, so look to the rebels for guidance. in the late 1970s, music was the backlash against an increasingly totalitarian UK conservative government - &, #otdin 1940, when the vichy regime was established in france, a youth subculture emerged to piss them off. les zazous were the punks of the second world war. they ate carrot salad (many of them were vegetarian) in the cafes of montmartre or the latin quarter & they drank beer with grenadine. they listened to jazz & their fashion was provocative: both men & women wore their hair long & often streaked colour through it. when the JPF threatened them, they moved to underground clubs...but their best bit of activism was above ground when they wore yellow stars in solidarity with the persecuted jews. if the kids are united...
