highway to brel

#art/#history: i'm on a highway to brel - & you should join me. it's a rare artist who can combine heart-stopping showmanship with lyrics that are - at once - witty & bursting with a compassion borne of an acute observation of society. it was a career that very nearly wasn't. as is often the case, his family didn't support what he was trying to do with the raw, physical performances that his powerfully insightful words required. it wasn't until 1959 (at the age of 30 & thanks to a bit of help from charles aznavour) that people really began to appreciate this giant talent. he went on to act in a few iconic french films & now his songs have been sung by everyone from barbara to bowie, including scott walker, nina simone & marc almond. he's also had a huge influence on another belgian genius: stromae. jaques brel, born #otd in 1929, surely packed a lot of life into his short 49 years. why not pop over to youtube & watch him perform 'les bourgeois'? he will change your life.

take me home!
