#art/#history: some people in the 60s were revolutionary - & then there's denise oliver-velez. not content with belonging only to the black panthers, denise (born #otd in 1947) also joined the young lords. as a member, she rejected its 'revolutionary machismo' (saying, 'machismo is reactionary, so you can't have revolutionary machismo. we women weren't having it. we made a very different kind of statement: we want equality for women. down with machismo & male chauvinism.') & contributed to its position paper on women. she's still an activist, but is also an editor (the daily kos) & a professor of anthropology.
