#art/#history: she's been making us laugh - sometimes through tears - since she decided (against her mother's wishes for her to be an author) to pursue a career in the theatre. in 1959, she won a tony award for her performance in 'once upon a mattress' on broadway. that breath of success propelled her to television &, by 1967, carol burnett (born #otd in 1933) had her own sketch series. 'the carol burnett show' was one of the first to regularly feature a drag queen - in this case, jim bailey. its popularity endured until 1978, but the flame-haired texan has had recurring acting roles as recently as 2013. hope she's not quite finished yet.
