art/history: #otd in 1934, renegade lovers, bonnie elizabeth parker & clyde chestnut barrow cemented their place in the annuls of notorious criminals - & pop culture. the two-year spree that led to their ambush & murder at the hands of four texas officers consisted mainly of small robberies. bonnie was never the gun-wielding, cigar-chomping siren that the media portrayed her to be. they pushed that narrative & contributed to the escalation of the pair's exploits. theirs is a typically tragic story of folie a deux: bonnie was born to modest means, but enjoyed writing poetry. following an early failed marriage, she fell in love with a poor farmer's son who'd already totted up a fair number of convictions by his 17th year. for some reason, the two had explosive chemistry. the same could be said for gainsbourg & bardot, pictured here, who immortalised bonnie & clyde in an eponymous song (released in 1967).
