billie's strange fruit

billie's strange fruit

from 30.00

#art/#history: written in 1937 by lewis allan (pseudonym of music teacher, abel meeropol), a #poem called 'bitter fruit' was made legendary #otd in 1939 when it was released as 'strange fruit'. sung as a devastating treatise on civil rights by the heartbreaking billie holiday, it went on to be recorded by nina simone, annie lennox & ub40 - but their versions weren't the ones that marked the first stirrings of the civil rights movement. it bears endless repetition: there's a message here that we must never forget.
'pastoral scene of the gallant south
the bulging eyes & the twisted mouth
scent of magnolias, sweet & fresh
then the sudden smell of burning flesh'...
