art/history: 'some people believe football is a matter of life & death. i am very disappointed with that attitude. i can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' frankly, mr shankly, i'll give you a pass because you were a thoroughly decent human being. born in scotland, an admirer of rabbie burns - especially 'a man's a man for a' that' - & a socialist who always strove (from his playing days in carlisle to his five year management career at anfield) to make footy more egalitarian, this magnanimous individual understood that the fans made football. bill shankly (born #otd in 1913) summarised his philosophy thusly: 'the socialism i believe in is everyone working for each other, everyone having a share of the rewards. it's the way i see football, the way i see life.'
