#art/#history: long before the smiths, albert finney was poster boy, rogue muse & inspiration for many an early 60s british new wave/kitchen sink drama. i can't quite believe he's drained his last bitter & rejected his last knighthood. would such a working class hero-cum-superstar be possible in today's britain? in the film adaptation of sillitoe's novel, 'saturday night & sunday morning', finney's arthur seaton was someone you wanted to slap in exasperation. just how many times would his struggle for freedom fuck up others' lives? &, yet, it was impossible to hate him. sillitoe was too clever for that. he knew how to write complex characters, you see - & albert knew how to nuance them. from 'two for the road' to 'corpse bride', albert's mischievous glimmer charmed every generation.
